Joane Somarriba Arrola (Guernica, Vizcaya, August 11, ) is a Spanish former cyclist, winner of three editions of the Tour de France (, and ), two of the Giro d'Italia ( and ) and the Time Trial World Championship.

Biography

She began her extensive track record by proclaiming herself the winner of the Spanish Junior Road Championship three consecutive years (, and ).

His outstanding international performance was linked from the beginning to his participation in the Giro d'Italia, in whose and editions he obtained fourth and sixth place respectively. However, it was in when he managed to climb to the top of the podium for the first time in the Italian round. Personal life

Somarriba was born on August 11, in Sopelana, a town located in the Biscayan region of Uribe Kosta, but he grew up in Bilbao, because his mother ran a restaurant on the Biscayan coast in Plentzia, a town located 35 kilometers from the capital.

His father, Bittor, a sailor by profession, took advantage of the long periods he spent on land to ride a bicycle, first in Bermeo and then in Sopelana, and little by little he instilled his passion in his three daughters: Ainhoa, Joane and Iraide.

In his childhood and youth he lived in the Basque towns of Bermeo and Sopelana.

He studied until COU, when he decided to drop out to dedicate himself professionally to cycling, a hobby instilled by his father.

In and , he had to face the hardest period of his life, due to complications that arose from a simple herniated disc operation. In the midst of preparing for the Barcelona Olympic Games, Somarriba saw how during said operation she caught an infection in her spine, which damaged a nerve center and was about to relegate her to a wheelchair.

She has written a book, titled Joane Somarriba, together with the sports journalist from El Mundo Jon Rivas, to publicize the lights and shadows of women's cycling and transmit the passion for this sport.

Joane is married to fellow cyclist Ramón González Arrieta, who was also her manager and coach.
