An Irish doctor who formerly held the position of chief medical officer (CMO) in the province of New Brunswick in Canada has died at the age of

Dr Eilish Cleary, of Penniac, New Brunswick, died in the city of Fredericton on Friday last, March She had been previously diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Dr Cleary was born in Dublin in to John and Mary Cleary.

She held the position from to , but was dismissed from the role in controversial circumstances, with opposition politicians arguing that the move was politically motivated after she issued a report in raising concerns about the health impacts of fracking.

She also spent time fighting Ebola in West Africa, and won the President&#;s Award from the Public Health Physicians of Canada in

Dr Cleary spent her later years in Penniac with her partner Paul Meyer.

According to her obituary, they worked on the property over the years and enjoyed the area’s wooded hills and walking trails.

With her funeral taking place in Canada today (Monday), her remains are set to be brought to Ireland, as per her wishes, where she will be buried with her mother in Crosskeys in Cavan.
